Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100
This formula works for any situation where you have a score out of a maximum. It is simple, universal, and never changes.
Simple Example
You scored 78 out of 100 on a math test. Percentage = (78 ÷ 100) × 100 = 78%
Or if your test was out of 80: Percentage = (78 ÷ 80) × 100 = 97.5%
How to Calculate Percentage for Multiple Subjects
For overall percentage across subjects, add all the marks together and divide by the total possible marks across all subjects.

Same formula — just add one more subject to the table:
If you add Sanskrit with 72/100: Total obtained = 479 + 72 = 551 Total marks = 700 Percentage = (551 ÷ 700) × 100 = 78.71%
What if Subjects Have Different Maximum Marks?
Some exams have practical components or subjects worth different totals. The formula still works — just use the correct total for each subject.
Example:
- Theory (80 marks) + Practical (20 marks) = 100 marks per subject
- You scored: Theory = 65, Practical = 17
- Combined marks = 82 out of 100
- Subject percentage = (82 ÷ 100) × 100 = 82%
For overall percentage when subjects have different totals, always sum the total obtained marks and total maximum marks across all subjects, then apply the formula.

How to Calculate 10th Percentage (CBSE/State Boards)
For CBSE Class 10, the percentage is calculated on the best 5 subjects out of 6 (usually):
- Take your best 5 subject scores
- Add them up
- Divide by 500
- Multiply by 100
Example: 82 + 91 + 78 + 75 + 85 = 411 411 ÷ 500 × 100 = 82.2%

CGPA to Percentage Conversion
Most Indian universities (especially those using a 10-point GPA scale) use:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
This is the formula recommended by CBSE and many universities. So:
- 8.0 CGPA = 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%
- 9.2 CGPA = 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%
- 6.5 CGPA = 6.5 × 9.5 = 61.75%
Some universities use a multiplier of 10 instead of 9.5. Always check your university’s official conversion formula, especially for job applications and further admissions.

How to Calculate Attendance Percentage
Same formula — just replace “marks” with “classes attended”:
Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100
Most universities require a minimum of 75% attendance to appear in exams. So if 120 classes were held:
- 75% of 120 = 90 classes minimum you must attend

How to Calculate Your Exam Score Percentage
For competitive exams where scores are out of unusual totals (e.g., 720 in NEET, 300 in JEE):
NEET: You scored 580 out of 720. Percentage = (580 ÷ 720) × 100 = 80.56%
JEE: You scored 210 out of 300. Percentage = (210 ÷ 300) × 100 = 70%
How to Find Marks from Percentage (Working Backwards)
If you know the percentage and the total marks, find marks obtained:
Marks Obtained = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Total Marks
Example: If 65% is needed to pass and the paper is for 80 marks: Passing marks = (65 ÷ 100) × 80 = 52 marks
Is 75% a Good Percentage?
75% is generally considered:
- First Division in most Indian school boards
