Petrol, Diesel, and CNG: Which Is Cheapest?
India’s three dominant auto fuels have very different price-to-efficiency profiles:
Petrol
Most widely available. Used by most hatchbacks, sedans, motorcycles, and scooters. As of mid-2024, petrol averages ₹94–₹107/litre across major Indian cities. Petrol engines are more refined but less fuel-efficient than diesel for long-distance driving.
Diesel
Cheaper per litre (approximately ₹87–₹92/litre in 2024) and 25–30% more energy-dense than petrol, meaning diesel vehicles can deliver significantly better mileage on highways. SUVs and trucks predominantly run on diesel. However, diesel engines produce more particulate emissions and face restrictions in some urban areas.
CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)
The most cost-effective fuel in India for city driving, averaging ₹70–₹95/kg (roughly equivalent to litres for this calculation). CNG vehicles have very high fuel efficiency in city conditions and produce significantly fewer emissions. However, CNG pumping stations are less numerous than petrol/diesel stations, making CNG less suitable for remote highway travel.
