Working days (also called business days) are the days of the week on which standard business operations are conducted, typically excluding weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and public holidays. India’s Public Holiday Landscape
Unlike many countries with a fixed national holiday calendar, India’s public holiday system is decentralised:
- National holidays (gazetted): Republic Day (Jan 26), Independence Day (Aug 15), Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2) — these apply universally.
- Restricted holidays: The Central Government lists additional festivals from which employees may choose 2–3 per year.
- State-specific holidays: Maharashtra celebrates Maharashtra Day (May 1); Tamil Nadu observes Pongal (Jan 14–15); Kerala celebrates Onam. These vary significantly.
